I've found a new calling in life: women's roller derby. If my love-hatred relationship with commas finally proves to be too intense to continue as a technical writer, I think I might join the Dreadnaught Dorothys...or maybe the Black-Eye Susans. Kansas City has its own roller derby league, and some of my friends and I attended their first game of the season.
The roller warriors are these fabulously costumed, roller skate wearing ladies, and they looked like they really enjoyed what they were doing, even down to what we speculated were choreographed fist fights. Thanks to Rollergirls on A&E, I understood who the blockers and jammers were and when the announcers threw out terms like "calling off the jam" and "riding the lip". I knew all the time I spent watching A&E would eventually pay off.
