It's Tangy!

The four things that have kept me from posting during the last month:

1. Crazy Paint Jobs
Saturday morning I ran a few errands I've been meaning to do for a while, such as mail a package, drop off some dry cleaning, stop by Home Depot and pick up a gallon of bright orange paint (Carotene, to be exact) so that I could paint my bedroom orange. I needed to change something in my life quickly, or else I was afraid I would do something drastic like quit my job, move to a new city, or get a tattoo of Steve Carrell on my thigh, or possibly a combination of all three. Painting my bedroom seemed like the most sensible thing. So I started painting without really waiting to see what the color looked like on the walls.

My bedroom is now the color of Tang. I kid you not. When I turn off my bedroom light and walk into my living room, I can still see my walls. They glow. They glow an iridescent DayGlo orange that would make the 80s proud. If I owned the place I might consider repainting the walls, but at this point in time, not really worth it. So I bought a dark green quilt for my bed and called it a day.

The funny thing? (Other than my walls looking like the astronauts' drink of choice.) I don't even like the color orange.

2. Vegas, Baby, Vegas!
My job sent me to Las Vegas to attend the Society for Technical Communication's annual conference. From May 7-10, I frolicked in Vegas with three other company writers. All on the company's dime. My mom has been waiting for a complete post on my Vegas trip, but you know what they say about Vegas. I will tell you a few things I learned: technical writers don't appear to be that young (I'm guessing the average age of the conference attendees was 45; I was the outlier); the vendors at the conference were rather smarmy -- how many times does a man trying to sell you computer software really need to touch your arm/hand/back/left buttocks? (okay, just kidding about the butt...or am I?); the dancers in Bally's Jubilee have the most perfect breasts I have ever seen and they can balance 75-lb headdresses designed by Bob Mackie without grimacing; Caesar's Palace has a club with a dance floor that is actually a ship that rocks back and forth and is surrounded by a moat, which you can totally lose your shoe in without trying and when you dance on it you can't help but feel a little like saying "Arrr, matey" and dancing like you have a peg leg; you can convince anyone in Vegas to buy you a drink; if you hate to dance, you are destined to be the one person in the group constantly asked to dance; you can travel to Vegas and wind up talking to guys from Allison's hometown; and you are two hours closer to being in the same time zone as Dujka.

3. The Screeching Pins
So...some people I know thought it would be fun to join a bowling league. And, being the avid bowler that I am (note sarcasm), I jumped at the chance. We bowl every Sunday night at 6 p.m. for the next 14 weeks!!!!! I kid you not -- we joined a 16-week long bowling league where we play three games every time. Up until two weeks ago, I'd never bowled more than two games in a row. And now, not only am I bowling competively against other people, I can't even sit out a frame when my wobbly little arms get tired. On the bright side, it's the Pizza Bowl League, so we get a pizza and pitcher of pop to help provide sustenance for our game. The people we bowl against are the stereotypical crowd you would expect to find in a bowling alley; in a way, it reminds me of being back home in Correctionville. (No offense to my parents, who belong to a bowling league back home in C'ville. ;-)

I am now the proud owner of my own pair of bowling shoes.

4. Douglas Adams
I completed the entire The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams, thus prompting me to wipe my Recently Read Books list clean and start fresh. Now I just need to figure out a way to smuggle the "borrowed" books back into Brett's house without him seeing me.

1) If you don't like orange, why'd you pick orange?

2) Awww, now I wanna go to Vegas...

3) Your bowling shoes had better not be orange.

4) I need to get me those books. If you like those, you might enjoy Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I like 'em a lots. :) More than a wossname. :)

I have this replica of van Gogh's Starry Night hanging in my bedroom that was painted by a Haitian art student. The stars and moons are orange, and one night a couple of weeks ago I had this dream where the art student asked me to paint my room using his art (van Gogh's art?) as my inspiration. I couldn't shake the dream, so I took it as a sign that I should paint my room.

Looking back on it now, I've probably watched one too many episodes of TLC's Trading Spaces, and I was probably worried about all the Vegas "business" trip expenses I put on my credit card (for which the picture on my card is of Starry Night).

The orange has grown on me, I think. I kinda want to lick my walls now.

Just because it looks like something doesn't mean it will taste like that same something. One morning, years ago, I had to fight long and hard with myself to keep myself from tasting my nail polish, which looked like chocolate. I think, had it not smelled like nail polish, I would have. ^_^
